STORIED. The Grunge Era
November 2 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
THE BERMAN is excited to present STORIED, a unique new cultural arts series at The J Detroit focused on sharing the Jewish narrative about some of the most legendary artists.
STORIED is back at The Berman Center for the Performing Arts for its second session: The Grunge Era. Join host Benji Rosenzweig as he guides the audience through this alternative rock genre and subculture that emerged in the U.S. during the mid-1980s and thrived through the mid 90’s. Benji will discuss how Grunge fuses elements of punk rock and heavy metal while incorporating influences from indie rock bands. He will delve into the angst-filled and introspective lyrics, often addressing themes of societal hardship, from bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Jane’s Addiction, and Soundgarden, as well as artists of the era like Alanis Morissette, Hole and Lenny Kravitz , who helped define Grunge against societal norms of race and gender. Like the first Storied event in April which focused on The Beatles, these historical vignettes will be looked at through the lens of where the Jewish community Collaborated and Contributed to bands and music.
Backed by a 5-piece rock band led by Detroit musician and actor Eric Gutman , the session will musically illustrate each artist and band with well-known songs from the Grunge catalog. In a setting similar to MTV Unplugged meets VH1 StoryTellers, Eric, the band and Benji will go back and forth between storytelling and music.
