The J includes, empowers and educates the special needs community.
Known for a warm and welcoming environment that puts families at ease, our Center for Special Education provides a variety of programming options. Every year, we engage 1,200 children, teens and adults of all abilities through inclusive Jewish classroom experiences, professional development, psychoeducational evaluations, teen leadership, disability awareness conferences, movie, book and family social events, inclusive camp experiences, vocational training, and adult social groups. All while bringing the community together and breaking down physical and mental barriers.
“We consider the special needs department to be a godsend to the special needs community in the West Bloomfield area.”
Our programs
At The J, we believe every person deserves the chance to discover their potential, which is why we offer inclusive programming options that are open to all, regardless of ability. Dedicated to treating everyone with respect, dignity and compassion, we strive to foster a sense of community by providing support, resources, and a place for families to come together.
Opening the Doors is a nationally recognized program that provides inclusive academic and behavioral services, so that children with diverse learning needs may attend, be successful and receive a quality education in Jewish early childhood, day school and congregation schools with their peers. Professional development classes and conferences on topics of mental health, disabilities and education strategies are also provided.
Learn MoreChildren and young adults with special needs are welcome to join us at our JCC Day Camps. Special needs counselors receive extensive training and certifications prior to the start of camp including, but not limited to, nonviolent crisis management, CPR/First Aid, epilepsy, behavior management, and an introduction to autism, inclusion and socialization.
Learn MoreSummer campers can come for a day or for the entire break to meet new friends and enjoy camp favorites like sports, swimming, and arts and crafts. Break Camp lasts from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and there is a 1:3 staff-to-camper ratio.
