Her essays and reviews have appeared in _The\nNew Yorker\, The New York Review of Books\, The New York Times\, Newsweek\,\nArchitectural Digest\,_  and _Slate._  She has been President of the Society of\nAmerican Historians\, a consultant (oral historian) to the Bill & Melinda Gates\nFoundation\, and a Fellow of the John D. and Catherine T.
