Fisher Federation Building or on ZOOM.\nTuesdays\, 7 PM – 8:30 PM\nOctober 8\, 15 \nEvery election poses quandaries for American Jews\, especially the choice\nbetween our interests and aspirations as American citizens and also\, to do\nwhat is best for Israel. This election is no exception; the choice this time\nfeels extraordinarily difficult. In these two sessions\, we will try to look\npast the never-ending campaign rhetoric and place the complexities of this\nchoice in a broader historical perspective and context. \nSession 1: Israel  \nWhat aspects of the political landscape of the last half-century have impelled\npoliticians in the two parties to be more or less supportive of the State of\nIsrael? How have events since October 7 altered this landscape? \nSession 2: Competing Visions of America: What does each mean for Jews?\nWhat do conflicting views of specific issues such as a woman’s right to choose\nand reproductive freedom and the broader issue of the erosion of democracy\,\nmean for Jews? How do we navigate the situation in which our political allies\nare antisemitic or allied with antisemites? \nJoin Howard and JLearn for this timely and important presentation. She has been President of the Society of\nAmerican Historians\, a consultant (oral historian) to the Bill & Melinda Gates\nFoundation\, and a Fellow of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.\nA member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, the American\nPhilosophical Society\, and the Executive Council of the Authors Guild\, she was\nthe Sue Ann and John Weinberg Director of the Dorothy and Lewis B.
