SUMMARY:Indigo Dyed Shibori Challah Covers
DESCRIPTION:Fiber on the Edge\nExhibit Dates: July 26 – September 2\, 2026\nOpening Reception: Sunday\, July 26\, 1 – 4 PM\nArtist Talk: Sunday\, August 30\, 2 PM \nIndigo is one of the oldest dyes in human history\, prized across civilizations\nfor its deep\, soulful\, living blues. Join us for an exciting\, hands-on\nafternoon where ancient global craft meets modern Jewish tradition. \nIn this creative workshop\, we will explore the beautiful concept of hiddur\nmitzvah —beautifying the commandment—by transforming raw fabric into an\nheirloom-quality\, one-of-a-kind Challah cover for your Shabbat table. \nUsing Shibori \, the exquisite Japanese art of resist-dyeing\, you will\nlearn how to fold\, bind\, twist\, and clamp fabric to unlock breathtaking\ngeometric patterns. As we dip our textiles into a rich\, organic indigo vat\,\nyou’ll watch the magic of oxidation turn your fabric from bright green to\nbrilliant blue right before your eyes. \nWe will gather to chat about the rich history of indigo\, the significance of\nthe Challah cover\, and the profound\, mystical symbolism of the color blue\n(Tekhelet) in Jewish tradition. \nYou’ll leave not just with a gorgeous piece of functional ritual art\, but with\na deeper connection to the vibrant colors of our heritage. \nRegistration required. \nExhibit Sponsors :\nManat Foundation\, Prudence Bernstein Trust\, Nancy Wanchik\, Esther Hankin \nFor more on exhibits and events\, visit\n(https://charachgallery.org/). \nNEW! SUMMARY:Wisdom\, Wonder\, Community 2026-2027 Fall Classes at JLearn
DESCRIPTION:Register for classes\nat:(http://jlearn.online/)**_ \, or call\n248-205-2557._** \nDear Detroit Jewish Community and beyond\, I love knowing that JLearn is more\nthan a place to take a class\, it is a place to connect\, explore\, question\, and\ngrow together. In this moment of rising antisemitism\, polarization\, and\nuncertainty\, being part of an informed and connected Jewish community matters\nmore than ever. \nJewish learning offers grounding\, meaning\, and a way to stay connected to both\nidentity and\ncommunity when so much feels unsettled. We believe learning is one of the\nstrongest\nresponses to difficult times. Through study\, conversation\, and shared\nexperience\, we deepen\nnot only knowledge\, but also connection to one another and to Jewish life\nitself. Whether your\ninterest is Jewish history\, current events\, sacred texts\, culture\, Israel\,\nspirituality\, or the arts\, JLearn\noffers a welcoming place to engage and grow. I truly believe that Jewish\neducation belongs to\neveryone\, at every level and for every interest. \nOur classes are dynamic\, accessible\, and led by outstanding instructors who\nbring warmth\,\nscholarship\, and creativity to every session. Whether in person or on Zoom\,\neach class is designed to spark conversation\, curiosity\, and meaningful\nconnection. \nThe Detroit Jewish Community is vibrant and resilient\, and JLearn is one way\nto find your place within it. People come for the learning and stay for the\nrelationships they build along the way. We invite you to join us\, find your\npeople\, and be part of a community that learns\, questions\, and grows together.\nWith warm regards in hopes of seeing you soon. \nShelley Wish Chaness\nSenior Director JLearn The J – Detroit \nView event on Jlive: https://jlive.app/events/16934 \nClick here to join the Zoom livestream.\n[]()

SUMMARY:ArtFULL: Art at the Heart of Jewish Life\, OPENING RECEPTION
DESCRIPTION:ArtFULL: Art at the Heart of Jewish Life\nExhibit Dates: October 18 – December 2\, 2026\nOpening Reception: Sunday\, October 18\, 1 – 4 PM \nThis exhibit celebrates the powerful and enduring relationship between art\,\nJewish identity\, tradition\, and community. Across two floors\, the exhibition\nexplores how artists transform Jewish experience into creative expression\, and\nhow art becomes part of the fabric of Jewish life. \nThe lower gallery\, juried by Barbara Heller (Director and Conservator\, Special\nProjects at DIA) features the work of local Jewish artists\, highlighting the\ndiverse ways artists draw from their Jewish experiences and identities.\nThrough paintings\, sculpture\, photography\, textiles\, and other forms of\ncreative expression\, each artist offers a unique perspective on what it means\nto create as a Jewish artist today. \nThe upper gallery\, juried by Rabbi Aaron Bergman and Barbra Kratchman\,\nfeatures artist-made Judaica\, bringing together treasured heirlooms on loan\nfrom community members alongside contemporary works by practicing artists.\nThese objects reveal the many ways Jewish traditions have been honored\,\ninterpreted\, and reimagined through art. From cherished objects passed down\nthrough generations to new works created for Jewish life today\, the gallery\ninvites visitors to consider how Judaica can hold memory\, embody ritual\, and\nconnect generations. \nArtist Spotlight: Danielle Styles \nExhibit Sponsors:\nDr. Judy Pearl\, Esther Hankin\, Rebecca & Fred Hankin\, Elaine & Michael\nSterling\, Nancy Wanchik\nProgram Sponsor:\nJudy & Dr. John Marx \nRegistration required \nOPEN HOURS DURING EXHIBITS:\nTuesday: 10 AM – 4 PM\nThursday: 11 AM – 7 PM\nSunday: 12 PM – 4 PM\nAppointments available\n*Visit the website or social media for up-to-date information & holiday closures.\nFor more on exhibits and events\, visit\n(https://charachgallery.org.) \nView event on Jlive: https://jlive.app/events/17423

SUMMARY:HOME
DESCRIPTION:Both breathtaking and hilariously relatable; we are all at times a little\nhomesick. PUSH Physical Theatre—the multi award-winning team behind Orlando\nFringe’s “best play” HYDE and the Off-Broadway sensation GENERIC MALE\n—create a visually stunning\, acrobatic dreamscape where we long for home while\naching to escape it. \nThrough a spectacular fusion of movement\, illusion\, and dynamic physicality\,\nHOME unpacks the fragile\, shifting nature of home. As the architecture\naround us collapses\, and reassembles\, we struggle to hold onto a place that\nwon’t stay still. \nFoundations crack\, rooms shift\, walls bend\, doors vanish. This heartwarming\nstory explores the tension between house and home—what we build\, what we lose\,\nand what we’re always searching for. Where do we belong? And what happens when\nthe place we call home refuses to stay the same? \nRun Time: 80 – 90 minutes\nAge Range: All ages \nSupported by __Irwin and Sadie Cohen Fund \n“Darren Stevenson\, Heather Stevenson and Ashley Jones show supreme command\nof their bodies as they tumble\, balance and support one another …”\n– Orlando Sentinel\n“…perfect metaphor-in-motion… myth and magic… super-strong acrobatics…”\n– City Newspaper\n“The most fantastic\, emotional event I have ever experienced. Absolutely\nremarkable”\n– Audience rave \nABOUT PUSH AND THE PERFORMERS\nIntense athleticism\, gravity-defying acrobatics\, and soulful artistry are the\ntrademarks of award-winning\, genre-defining PUSH Physical Theatre. Founded in\nRochester\, NY in 2000 by husband-and-wife team\, Darren and Heather Stevenson\,\nout of a desire to “push” the boundaries of conventional theatre\, PUSH has\nsince earned an international reputation as one of the world’s leading\nphysical theatre companies. \nOver the last two years PUSH has performed at the International Festival for\nJewish Theatre in Jerusalem\, appeared Off-Broadway at the Soho Playhouse\,\ngarnered multiple awards including “International Fringe Encore Series”\, four\n“Best of the Fest” awards as well as “Critics Choice Best Show” at Orlando\nFringe and “Outstanding Production” at Ottawa Fringe\, a “Jenny” in Winnipeg\nand “Media Pick” with a 5 out of 5 star review in Edmonton.\nPUSH has also been featured in acclaimed collaborations with the Grammy-\nwinning Ying Quartet\, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra\, and Pulitzer\nPrize-nominated composer Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon’s two multi-media operas.\nPUSH also produces its own works including RACE or ‘You’ve Seen Me Before\,’ in\ncollaboration with artist Hassiem Muhammad (online 2020); Generic Male: Just\nWhat We Need\, Another Show About Men (2021); Someone No One Can See\, a\ncollaboration with transgender artist Penny Sterling (2022); and Hyde (2023).\nPUSH has been recognized for service to the community through the Rochester\nCommunity Foundation’s 2023 Ames-Amzalak Award for Nonprofit Excellence\,\nUniversity of Rochester’s Lillian Fairchild Award\, Performing Artist of the\nYear Award from the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester\, and the\n“Community of Color” Black History Month Anton Germano Dance Award\, honoring\nadvocates for an inclusive and diverse community who affect positive change.\nPUSH engages underserved populations in areas with some of the highest poverty\nrates and too little access to the arts\, and provides workshops for children\nwith disabilities\, the National Technical Institute for the Deaf\, youth\ninvolved in the juvenile justice system\, and adults in senior facilities.\nTo serve historically excluded communities\, we are well aware of the need to\nseek out sources\, inspiration and material beyond the lived experiences of our\ncore company. Our creative consultants and focus groups include Black artists\nsuch as Thomas Warfield and Hassiem Muhammad\, transgender artist Penny\nSterling\, people from rural areas\, people with various disabilities\, members\nof the National Technical Institute for the Deaf\, and members of the\nUniversity of Rochester Office of Diversity and Inclusion.\nMore about the show and it’s creators:\nTo be homesick may embody a longing for home—or feeling sick of home. Today\nmany people say they ‘don’t feel at home’. But what do we mean when we speak\nof home? Is it a place? Is it other people? Or do we carry home with us? Using\ndance\, non-traditional partnering\, mime and more\, Home(sick) will tell stories\nthat draw audiences into questions about home: Where do I belong?’ What makes\nus feel ‘at home’—or not? What responsibilities do I have to this home\, to\nthis community? \nView event on Jlive: https://jlive.app/events/16761
