SUMMARY:Scholars in Session: A Pickle Problem-The Deli Revival and American Jewish Religion
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Rachel B. Gross explores how participating in the deli revival provides\nan alternative\, under-appreciated way of practicing in American Jewish life.\nIn her book\, Beyond the Synagogue: Jewish Nostalgia as Religious Practice\,\nthe author traces American Jews’ involvement in a broad array of ostensibly\nnonreligious activities. From conducting Jewish genealogical research\,\nvisiting Jewish historic sites\, purchasing books and toys that teach Jewish\nnostalgia to children\, to seeking out traditional Jewish foods\, Gross argues\nthat these practices illuminate how many American Jews are finding and making\nmeaning within American Judaism today.\nRachel B. Her book\, Beyond\nthe Synagogue: Jewish Nostalgia as Religious Practice \, is a 2021 National\nJewish Book Award finalist and received an Honorable Mention for the 2021 Saul\nViener Book Prize\, given by the American Jewish Historical Society. \nProf. Gross will be signing her book following the program\, which also\nincludes a free pickle tasting! \nPresented by SAJE (Seminars for Adult Jewish Enrichment).
