SUMMARY:Serving Up Stories: Everything I Need to Know\, I Learned Playing Pickleball-Stories from the Court
DESCRIPTION:Local author\, Rick Broida shares his new book\, Everything I Need to Know\, I\nLearned Playing Pickleball: Stories from the Court\, Lessons from the Sport \,\nfollowed by book signing\, tours of JRec and a Pickleball demonstration. All\nparticipants will receive a free JRec pass. \nABOUT Rick Broida brings 30+ years of "tech-pertise" to Yahoo product\nreviews and best lists\, specializing in speakers\, streaming services\, smart\nhome devices\, TVs\, laptops\, drones and more. In addition to routinely testing\nnew products and services\, he works to simplify the confusing world of tech to\nmake it more accessible to readers. Rick’s consumer-technology writing dates\nback to the days of the Commodore Amiga\, which means he’s not only very old\nbut also very wise (and incredibly modest). He’s worked for CNET\, Lifehacker\,\nPopular Science and Wired\, to name a few\, and runs the Substack @dealsecrets\,\nfocused on money-saving advice. During his off hours\, you’ll almost certainly\nfind him swinging a pickleball paddle. \nSponsored by Henry & Delia Meyers Library\, JRecreation\, Detroit Jewish Book\nFair. \nView event on Jlive: https://jlive.app/events/10050

SUMMARY:Scholars in Session: A Pickle Problem-The Deli Revival and American Jewish Religion
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Rachel B. Gross explores how participating in the deli revival provides\nan alternative\, under-appreciated way of practicing in American Jewish life.\nIn her book\, Beyond the Synagogue: Jewish Nostalgia as Religious Practice\,\nthe author traces American Jews’ involvement in a broad array of ostensibly\nnonreligious activities. From conducting Jewish genealogical research\,\nvisiting Jewish historic sites\, purchasing books and toys that teach Jewish\nnostalgia to children\, to seeking out traditional Jewish foods\, Gross argues\nthat these practices illuminate how many American Jews are finding and making\nmeaning within American Judaism today.\nRachel B. Gross is Associate Professor and John and Marcia Goldman Chair in\nAmerican Jewish Studies at San Francisco State University. Her book\, Beyond\nthe Synagogue: Jewish Nostalgia as Religious Practice \, is a 2021 National\nJewish Book Award finalist and received an Honorable Mention for the 2021 Saul\nViener Book Prize\, given by the American Jewish Historical Society. \nProf. Gross will be signing her book following the program\, which also\nincludes a free pickle tasting! \nPresented by SAJE (Seminars for Adult Jewish Enrichment). Sponsored by Center\nfor Judaic Studies at Eastern Michigan University\, Detroit Jewish Book Fair\nand JLearn. \nSeminars for Adult Jewish Enrichment (SAJE) programming is endowed by a\ngenerous gift from Cis Maisel and supported by Carol & Ronald P. Fogel\, Sheri\n& David Jaffa\, and Elaine & Michael Serling through The J’s Pillar of Light\nProgram. SAJE inspires meaningful connections and important conversations. \nView event on Jlive: https://jlive.app/events/10045
